Planting Seeds in My Montana Garden, Spring 2020 - Part 2

IMG_2112.jpg

These herb seeds were a Christmas present. Who knew I would need them so much? Cilantro (foreground), sage, parsley, thyme and oregano. They’ll be ready by June-ish and beyond. Trim carefully and the annuals will grow back all season. Sage comes back year after year, oregano is pretty hardy, and the rosemary needs to come inside for the winter if you are Zone 5 like us!

I've not posted a lot of gardening photos over the past few years with good reason. We are basically bi-coastal, so if I plant tomatoes on the east coast, by the time they are ready, I am not there to enjoy them. And vice versa. This year I am socially distancing in Montana, so we are planting seeds! By we, I mean me and a friend, and she is doing most of the work. Herbs, lettuces, squash, beans, tomatoes and flowers, in addition to the chive, rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries, apples, cherries and plums that grow on the property. The cherry trees bloomed just today, so though it is cloudy I took pictures, we have never been here to witness it. Very excited! I have resolved to learn how to can things this summer, so stay tuned for that. Here are some photos from early March through the beginning of May. Planting seeds is calming, not hard and fun to do with children. It helps to have a grow light, but you don't really need anything but soil and seeds. If you can put purchased plants in the ground right about now, by all means do. We have a landscaping project that my friend and I are doing ourselves so there are some nursery-grown items as well. Enjoy. I will post updates throughout the year. Some plants will thrive, others will not. It's just the way it goes. Check in soon and thanks for following.

Growing plants is a fun hobby, but they do require a little attention almost daily. Great to do with children and. frankly, fresh grown food tastes SOOOO much better! It’s a satisfying hobby and if you have the time now to do it, give it a try!
